This weekend we kept it local and stuck around Madison, Wisconsin! Sometimes exploring your own backyard is just as fun and a great way to spend a summer weekend.
ADVENTURE OF THE WEEK
Sara here :: we were fresh off returning home from a trip to Michigan and Saturday was shaping up to be one of the nicest weather days in a long time as we came off the super hot weather streak. If you don’t know by now, my husband Justin LIVES for summer, sunshine, and any outdoor activity so we had to seize this day at home!
Dane County Farmer’s Market in Madison, Wis.
The Dane County Farmer’s Market, along with many events, has had a rough road to getting back to “normal” so this past weekend happened to be the first day it returned to the Capital square. Held every Saturday from mid-June through mid-November, this is a staple Madison tradition. The hours of the market are 6:15am – 1:45pm.
Whether you’re actually in need of produce and goods, it’s a a great morning spent walking around, browsing local foods, and great people-watching! Some of the goodies we left with were two tiny cactus plants that my kids fell in love with, beef jerky, squeaky cheese curds (a must!), some fresh tomatoes, cookies, and cookie dough in a jar. Highly recommend heading downtown Madison on a Saturday and supporting the local farmers and producers who have been struggling the past year as well!

Camp Beef Butter BBQ in Westport, Wis.
We’ve always loved Beef Butter BBQ food at events around Madison and enjoyed takeout from the restaurant on Sherman Avenue over the winter. When we learned that a new summer weekend event called Camp Beef Butter was coming to town, we were excited to check it out.
I didn’t do a very good job at getting photos! Just another excuse to go again this weekend 🙂
Located off Hwy M in the town of Westport, between Middleton and Waunakee, Camp Beef Butter is a pop-up event with food, beverages, and live music every weekend in the summer. Open from 4-9pm Friday and Saturday evenings, Camp Beef Butter has a food truck serving up meals that include brisket, pulled pork, and brats as well as sides of baked beans and mac & cheese. The night we visited, Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream also had their truck serving up sweet ice cream treats! S’mores kits are also available for purchase.
It’s located in an open field tucked away at the edge of the woods with plenty of picnic tables and firepits. Parking attendants helped upon entry and there is no admission fee. We packed our own lawn chairs but when we arrived around 5:30pm we didn’t have any trouble getting a table. Live music begins around 6pm each night with a variety of bands scheduled.
Around 6pm when the bluegrass band Miles over Mountains was starting, the crowds started to come and it got pretty busy. There is plenty of space to spread out though and bathrooms were also available. We brought along a football to toss and there were cornhole boards set up too. Overall, this was a really fun outdoor event and the perfect end to a summer Saturday night!
