A Fall Weekend at Justin Trails Resort in Sparta, Wisconsin

Since 2020 has been weird and we’ve been on more bike trips this year than total in our lives, we have been wanting to check the Elroy-Sparta State Trail. Justin Trails Resort outside of Sparta, Wisconsin graciously hosted us for the weekend (along with our pups!) so we could spend the weekend exploring the area and bike trails with our families.

Nestled in Amish country and the Driftless region of Wisconsin, this bed and breakfast resort has lodging options for many budgets, 200 acres to explore (with your dog too!), and a fantastic homecooked breakfast among other amenities.

Our cabin was named the “Paul Bunyan”, a Scandinavian-style open-concept log home. This particular cabin sleeps 6 people (one king bed, one queen bed and a set of twin bunks) and has two bathrooms with showers and a double whirlpool tub. Note, this is all open-concept so great for a large family, friends or two families who are comfortable with each other 🙂 In case you missed it, we shared a full cabin tour and other photos and clips from our weekend on our Instagram story highlights in the “Sparta WI” tab.

Since cabins with modern heating and air conditioning aren’t for everyone, the resort has many lodging options – traditional campsites, single suites within a traditional farmhouse, an authentic tipi, and the most unique – the Snuggalo for a true glamping experience!

Our pups loved roaming the trails all day with us and curling up by the fireplace at night. It’s not often that we find lodging options that allow dogs so this was a treat for the big guys! All rooms at the resort are dog-friendly – make sure to ask about other amenities offered at the resort to pet lovers. (Even if you’re without a dog, you can borrow the owner’s Husky for walks on the property!) Two llamas named Dusty and Rusty reside at Justin Trails as well and are able to be fed and petted. There are also two disc golfing courses at the resort, available for day use with a pass purchased at the Lodge.

Breakfast is included and available in the Lodge every morning from 7:30 – 10:00am. The innkeeper, Donna, makes the meal from scratch each morning using farm-fresh and locally-sourced ingredients. The menu varies each day, but we gorged on some amazing muffins, baked french toast, homemade yogurt and granola, locally-smoked bacon and sausage, and delicious Italian coffee.

The resort had so many personal touches that made it feel like you were staying with family, rather than strangers. We met several other couples staying on the property and got some good tips on where to go and what to do. Dawn, the owner’s daughter, showed us a hike up the hill (used for sledding in the winter!) to a wildlife observation tower that provides a 10-mile view of the countryside. We can’t possibly touch on all the unique attractions this resort features, so be sure to check out the Justin Trails blog for posts on just about everything you’d want to know (and more!).

Be sure to check out the Covid-19 policies and requirements before you go, as things are always changing. However, we felt very comfortable with the safety precautions in place at the resort. Every encounter, staff members were wearing masks and providing opportunities for social distancing. Breakfast at the Lodge was offered with a to-go option as well.

We cannot say enough good things about Justin Trails and how much fun we had in our short time here. Our girls were conspiring about how we could live together in the Paul Bunyan cabin forever and our boys kept raving about the breakfast. We hope to return this winter, as it sounds like a blast with the sledding hill and bonfires. Summer would be beautiful with all the hiking and biking options in and around Sparta.
