6 Cozy Cabins to Visit This Fall

October 4, 2021

Over the past few years, we’ve done a fall weekend away at a cozy cabin somewhere. It gives us something to look forward to when the weather gets cold and the busy calendar starts to empty out. Cooking dinner together, watching football, having a glass of wine around a campfire on a cool night…it doesn’t get much better than that!

Here’s a few of the places we’ve spent weekends at in fall (as well as a few others we’ve stayed at in other seasons but would also make a perfect fall weekend destination!)

Our Favorite Cabin Rentals To Visit This Fall

(in no particular order, be cause we can’t choose a favorite!)

1 :: The Brick House | Manitowish Waters, WI

Entrance to the Brick House, one of the homes from Alderwood Resort

Alderwood Resort has several cabins, but the Brick House is the only one open year-round. We visited in late October 2020 and were surprised with the perfect snowy weekend in the northwoods! This home comfortably slept 11 guests (6 adults + 5 young kids) and was full of amenities.

Our favorite amenities: the cozy indoor woodburning fireplaces (two!) and the large outdoor firepit overlooking the large lakefront yard.

Best memories: the kids (and dads) having a big snowball fight in the front yard, then coming inside to cheer on the Packers next to a roaring fire with chili for dinner!

2 :: Pine Cove Cabin | Minocqua, WI

Pine Cove Cabin in Minocqua, WI

The Pine Cove Cabin account on Instagram was one of the first rentals we started following when we started our own blog, so we were so excited to finally visit ourselves! Pine Cove Cabin is a 90+ year old property that the owners remodeled in the most spectacular ways. The original details like the old road sign that now hangs in the living room and the massive old fireplace have been maintained but also blend perfectly with the “modern” appliances in the cutest blue kitchen.

Our two families spent a February weekend at Pine Cove and took the kids ice fishing on Lake Katherine, where the home is located. While the home is amazing in itself, the property is just as detailed. A large sloped yard leading down to the Lake was the perfect sledding hill and the short 5-minute drive to Minocqua gives it a very convenient location in a quiet neighborhood.

As always, you know how much we love a good winter campfire! Bonus points with the frozen lake in the background.

3 :: Justin Trails | Sparta, WI

Justin Trails

We were interested in trying the Elroy-Sparta Bike Trail for the first time with our kids and landed on Justin Trails Bed, Breakfast and Resort for our lodging. The resort features many different kinds of lodging options – from a traditional bed & breakfast style Carriage House, to a few cabins, as well as a couple “glamping” experiences! The owners graciously hosted us in the Paul Bunyan Cabin and we loved walking out the back door to the beautiful property.

Justin Trails sits on over 200 acres of land, with disc golfing, walking trails, and room to wander. The resort is even home to a few resident llamas! All lodging options are also dog-friendly, so our pups got to join on this trip!

We knew a breakfast was offered, but we were naïve in assuming it was like a hotel-style continental breakfast with cereal boxes and stale muffins. Donna, one of the owners, prepares a FULL spread of the best breakfast we’ve ever had! We’re heading back this coming weekend for another visit and everyone is looking forward to Donna’s breakfast!

4 :: Porte Haven | Door County, WI

We were invited to stay at Porte Haven in March 2021 by the owners of the Door County Cabin Collective as the second family to stay in the home before renting to the general public. This visit was actually Sara’s family’s first time to Door County and this home gave us a great welcome!

Located on the tip of Door County, the entire backside of the home features Lake Michigan. The outdoor spaces were plenty, between the large driveway for freeze tag, the upper deck with a Solo Stove to view the lake, or the lower level firepit. One of the fun surprise features in the home was the former boathouse turned into a fun game area that we hung out in after the kids were in bed.

Oh, and the master bedroom had the most amazing sunrises through the port windows. Also, dog friendly! 🙂

5 :: The Triangle House | Door County, WI

Another invitation back to Door County came in May 2021 when the owners were getting ready to rent the property after getting it ready to go. The pups came along on this trip as well, and you know we appreciate a good dog-friendly home!

The Triangle House is aptly named for its many angles and triangle-shaped exterior. The home is a unique layout, with a traditional main-level living space that walks out onto a large deck overlooking a huge yard on Lake Michigan’s shore. A fun spiral staircase goes up to the 4th floor lookout tower, as well as the third floor bunk bed room for the kids. The coolest feature about this layout is that every single room in the house had views of Lake Michigan!

An outdoor hot tub and firepit were a really nice feature in the backyard, but the rocky lakeshore stole the show (along with the hammock!). The noise of waves crashing into the rocks at night was better than any sound machine

6 :: Big Bear Hideaway | Boulder Junction, WI

This was a resort we discovered and visited several years ago with our families in October 2019 (it was actually the first trip we shared live after starting out blog!). The cabin we rented was very reasonably priced and had some fun features, like a tree in the middle of the living room!

We loved having s’mores around the community firepit as well as close proximity to hop on our favorite bike trail, which runs right through Boulder Junction!

If cabins in the woods aren’t quite your thing, we also highly recommend the Stagecoach Inn, a cozy little bed and breakfast in Cedarburg, Wisconsin! There are several rooms to choose from, and the downtown shops and restaurants are all within walking distance of the Inn. Plus, the owners are just about two of the nicest humans we’ve ever met!
